Visit to Hella and Karl Helt

Hella and Karl, a Danish-German couple, visited the Southern Jutland Radio Museum some time ago - june 29, 2011. Karl, who, with the help of his wife Hella, has collected old radios for many years, received a trip to the Southern Jutland Radio Museum as a birthday present from his wife.

During the visit, Karl talked about his collection and invited us to Elmshorn near Hamburg, so that we could also enjoy the many old devices. On the same occasion, Karl also wanted to donate some specimens from the collection to the Radio Museum.

On Thursday, October 6, 2011, Sven and Tommy drove to Elmshorn, where we were received very hospitably by Hella and Karl.

I don't know exactly what we were expecting, but it's certain that we were in for a big surprise. The collection was not only large, but it also contained a number of treasures.

Sven and I have subsequently talked about how it would be really nice to share this fine collection with others. This could of course be done by posting a number of pictures of the collection on this website, but we could also - and I would like to emphasize that we have not yet spoken to Hella and Karl about this - create a special exhibition here at the Radio Museum with some of the finest treasures (and there are many of them). It could be a special exhibition that lasted two to three months, where we would arrange for the transport of the devices between Sønderborg and Elmshorn, and where we would also ensure that the exhibition was covered in the media.

It is certain that there will be more mention of this fine collection here on the website.

It should also be noted that Sven and I were spared the very embarrassing task of having to communicate in German, as Hella speaks very good Danish.

The pictures show a few of Hella and Karl's treasures.

Notice the small red sign, on which is a warning from the "Führer" - do not listen to anything but German stations - if you listen to foreign stations you risk being sent to a reformatory. This warning must have given an uncontrollable desire to listen to these stations to find out what could be so terrible.

The idea of exhibiting some treasures from Hella and Karl's large collection has now become a reality.

On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, Sven and Tommy drove to Elmshorn to select equipment together with Hella and Karl. The limited space in the car meant that what was to be exhibited should be small but good. We quickly came to the conclusion that the exhibition should include German radios from the time of the "Third Reich" as well as a few selected ones from the GDR era. The reason for this choice was that these types of radios are never, or at least very rarely, seen in Denmark.

After a nice cup of coffee with bread and a good "radio chat" with Hella and Karl, the "TomTom navigator" was set to the home address, and the trip went back to Denmark.

The special exhibition has now been completed in the period July to September 2012, and the description of this can be seen under the menu item "Special exhibition 2012.

In connection with the return of the exhibited devices, Karl donated the radio, which we call "Erich Honecker's Radio", to the Radio Museum. The radio will be part of the Radio Museum's exhibition in the future.
