Ekskursion 2023

(Now also in English :-)

Visit to Sønderborg Hospital Museum on September 5, 2023.

There were 12 of us who started the visit to the Hospital Museum at 10 am, where we were welcomed by the museum's chairman Bent Jensen. In the museum's meeting room, pictures were shown with accompanying lectures about the history of Sønderborg Hospital.

marine lazarett The museum at Sønderborg Hospital is housed in one of the two unique old buildings from 1911 - when South Jutland was under German rule - which was built as "Marine-Lazarett Sonderburg" and attached to the German naval artillery school, which was inaugurated as early as 1907 (the current barracks building). All the patients, and with very few exceptions all the staff, were employed in the German navy.

kongevejshospitalet The civilian population was treated at the municipal hospital, which was located on Kaiser Wilhelm Allé (now Kongevej) in Sønderborg. The hospital was built in 1894 and purchased by Sønderborg Municipality in 1975 and then demolished. The area is now a park with playground equipment, a campfire site and a shelter.

After the reunification in 1920, both the naval artillery school and the naval hospital were taken over by the Danish state and reopened as Sønderborg Barracks and the State Hospital in Sønderborg, respectively. In 1934, the County Hospital on Kongevej was functionally merged with the State Hospital in Sønderborg.

In 1960, the name was changed to the National Hospital in Sønderborg, as the mental hospitals in Denmark would henceforth be called State Hospitals.

During the local government reform in 1970, the National Hospital was transferred from state ownership to Sønderborg County Municipality, and the name was changed to Sønderborg Hospital. At the same time, construction began on a new Central Hospital (the 4 tall, elongated concrete buildings), which was built in two stages and was completed in 1985.

When the counties were divided into 5 regions in 2007, the name was changed to Sygehus Sønderjylland, Sønderborg, under the Region of Southern Denmark.

And afterwards a guided tour, with stories about the exhibited objects.

For those interested in electronics, there is a lot of hospital electronics at the museum. Here are some examples:

Electrocardiograph from 1925
Blood gas measurement equipment from Radiometer
Tesla's induction device
Tesla device for home treatment of arthritis and muscle pain

Hearing Test Equipment ...
... from M.P. Pedersen
The operating room
Sønderborg Hospital. Names and Logos through the ages

After the museum visit, some of us frequented the hospital restaurant, where they make some excellent lunch dishes and sandwiches.
